COMS - Study and selection of satellite images of nano satellites for the agriculture field in Bolivia (2021 - )
-
The importance of acquiring terrestrial satellite images for a country is a priority since these images can have different uses such as agriculture, military, cartography, border control, etc. Therefore, it is essential for a country like Bolivia to obtain satellite images. According to studies carried out by the Bolivian government, the greatest use of satellite images could occur in agriculture, since it is the fastest growing sector in the country. For this reason, this research is focused on the study of the type of satellite images that would be most useful for the field of agriculture. Because satellite technology was developed in recent years the nanosatellites are increasingly use for different applications. Within these applications, the terrestrial images are the most used nowadays.Investigadores:Jorge Soliz, PhD.c.Referencias sobre el proyecto:jorgesoliz@upb.edu
COMS - Gestión de lanzamiento para un nano satélite (2021)

Nowadays, due to the increase of economic accessibility in satellites and its growing development, many universities and research centers have ventured into space projects by manufacturing their own satellites and sending them into space. Even though, these projects have different applications, they all are focused in the research and development of knowledge. The total cost of a space mission (for pico-type satellites) is divided approximately into 50% design and construction and 50% in satellite launch. Unfortunately, not all countries are able to carry out their satellite projects due to economic problems. Hence, this chapter presents a non-profitable satellite launch alternative which represents a great opportunity for many developing countries. In this way, the opportunity to carry out free launches is offered by international institutions and organizations such as space agencies, and some private companies. In order to collaborate to those college students’ groups and research centers, whom are not economically able to finance a rocket to launch their satellites into space and develop their projects, these launches are cost-free. Thereby, this chapter specifically focuses on describing the free launch options (opportunity launches). Mainly, the launch opportunities are planned for picosatellites, light weight (less than 1 kg) and dimensionally small satellites. Furthermore, due to the low budget and scarce accessibility of components of developing countries, they commonly use picosatellites.Investigadores:Jorge Soliz, PhD.c.Referencias sobre el proyecto:jorgesoliz@upb.edu
COMS - Diseño e implementación de la estación terrena UPB (2021)

The following work presents a specific proposal that explores the implementation of a low-cost, portable and easily deployable ground-station designed to track and receive signals from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather satellites in VHF and UHF bands. This signal will be processed and then converted to a visual format(images), which will be used later in meteorological studies. This work is part of the developing space projects that the Universidad Privada Boliviana (located in Cochabamba, Bolivia) is carrying out related to space issues. The core of this project is the use of software-defined radio technology for the radio receiver and an easy-to-build and powerful enough antenna to receive signals coming from space.Equally important, the possibility of containing everything related to the radio system in one lace and send the data collected thought a network link like Ethernet will be approached. Through this, a better performance could be achieved by reducing attenuation and losses. Also, this link will make the positioning and physical accommodation easier. In most of the previously checked works, the Ground Station architecture consists of an antenna, radio receiver and computer to decode process and display the captured data. However, the quality of the captured signal can be improved even further by adding an LNA between the antenna and radio [2], with the purpose to make the radio signals from ground stations stronger. Hence, the addition of a Low Pass Filter or a Band Pass Filter is required. In order to develop a gap between the radio receiver and an ethernet or internet network, a server must be added to the architecture. To accomplish this task, a Single Board Computer or SBC is the best option, due to its size, consumption, and connectivity. All in all, time has proven that SDR receivers based in the R820T have a good performance/cost relationship. Therefore, it is present in most of the low-cost radio designs. A last, this work is designed to help provide more meteorological information, coming from satellites, for both public and private organizations in Bolivia.Investigadores:Jorge Soliz, PhD.c.Referencias sobre el proyecto:jorgesoliz@upb.edu
